Gastronomics of Bologna's Surrounding Cities

I've been reading about the food centers of Northern Italy, and I'm hoping to try these dishes, in particular, if we plan to visit or pass through the Bologna region (or Emilia/Modena/Ferrara).

Capellacci di zucca
(squash ravioli with parmesan, nutmeg, butter, and sage)

Capellatacci
(sweet pasta stuffed with chestnut, chocolate, dressed with olive oil and black pepper... so basically Nutella ravioli)

and of course, Modena's balsamic vinegar on anything.

Danielle and Emily, do you recall your favorite dishes from your Italy experiences and which areas did them the best?  I am most excited about the food!

  1. I could write a novel on the fabulous food I ate while studying abroad and I was really poor so it will only be better for our trip I'm sure! Some standouts were the Pesto in Genoa on handmade pasta, Ribolitta soup in Florence, it's a bread soup that we had at a little restaurant my architecture professor took us to and it was so simple but also completely wonderful. I'm going to call my professor who lives outside of Venice and get recommendations before we leave because it can be hard to track down some of the good restaurants when you're in touristy towns like Florence or Rome. Also I had a pasta with shaved truffles in Venice that was really amazing and I discovered a love of eggplant dishes which is something that I never ate before my trip. Basically I came back home about 15lbs heavier but it was worth it :) Oh and finally last but not least the joy of chocolate and hazelnut! This combination is everywhere and I'm pretty sure I ate at least one chocolate bar a day, so good!

  2. Also one of my best friends from college went to the university in Bologna so I'll email her for recommendations as well!

  3. Your food experiences sound delicious Danielle! I don't remember eating any particular dishes, unfortunately. The gelato is what stands out in my memory.
